How to Strengthen the Hip for Hip Pain

Today I’m going to show you my favorite hip strengthening exercise for hip pain: side planks. The reason I like this exercise is that 1. If done right, this exercise strengthens the gluteus medius muscle, which is a hip stabilizer. 2. It is also a core exercise, so it is like two exercises in one. I will show you three variations of this exercise. At the end of the video I will also demonstrate an alternative exercise if you cannot put too much pressure on your shoulder.

Lift your hip off the floor and push your hips forward into a hip thrust. Make sure you push your elbow into the floor as well to keep your shoulder strong to support your body. Make sure to keep breathing. Keep the hips up as long as you can. Lower your hip down to the floor to rest. Repeat for 3 sets. All footages used in this video are either original or obtained via Storyblocks. Disclaimer: Please consult your local doctor or physical therapist before attempting these exercises.
